A Nice Cutthroat Trout                                            On the way down from the Upper Rainbow Lakes

Fly-Fishing & Llama Treks

Welcome to Wilderness Outfitters X-Stream Adventures western Montana fly-fishing trips and llama treks!  This is the perfect adventure for fly-fisherman of any skill level and the outdoorsman who likes to relax and get away from it all in a serene, beautiful mountain setting.  We'll pack our gear into the mountains of the Tobacco Root Range or Lee Metcalf Wilderness in Beaverhead National Forest by llama (you'll be walking).  We'll set up a base camp from where we'll head out on our daily fishing and hiking excursions.  We fish mountain streams and mountain top lakes filled with cutthroat trout and rainbow trout.  The streams form terraces or little pools as they flow down between mountain peaks and each has trout waiting to be caught.  It's a special area to fish because the trout have virtually no sense of man and it's a great time to try out new and different flies.  The special thing about this area is the amount of trout you'll catch - if you're interested in a lot of action, this is the trip to go on.  We catch A LOT of cutthroats!  You'll want to bring your own fishing gear but we'll have flies you may like to try and rods you may use if something happens to yours.

Trip Packages

An average trip lasts 3-4 days between July 1 and mid-August with us hiking in early the first morning and hiking out in the evening on the last day.  However this is a very personalized adventure and we are willing to go for shorter or longer.  We do only take 4 people out at a time since there are only 6 llamas to pack gear in and we like to keep attention to detail to give you an enjoyable trip.  Pick up from Bozeman, MT early the first morning and return the last night is included or you may meet us by your own means at the trail head.  3 delicious meals per day are served at base camp or brought along on the trail with us.  Most gear is provided (ie, tents, cots, sleeping bags, first aid kits, food, etc.).  However, you will want to bring your own bug spray, a flashlight, clothing (lightweight pants, good walking shoes/boots, t-shirts, warm sleeping clothes, warm jacket), and fishing gear.

Prices:             $175.00 per person per day
A  50% deposit is required to book your trip with the remainder due before start of the trip.

Fishing on the lower mountain stream                                                     A cutthroat on the line!

Not as interested in the fishing part but just want a get-away from the city?  Bring along your camera for the incredible photo opportunities that await you.  Besides the breathtaking views atop the mountains, we may see elk, moose, mountain goats, black bear, wolves, bald eagles, and many other animals.  The beautiful wildflowers will be dressed in their summer brilliance and make for great photos as well.  Bring along a species identification book and keep track of all the wonderful different plants and animals you see.  Most important, RELAX and enjoy being far into the wild.  This is a great way to rediscover what's really important in life - and you can forget about what's going on in the outside world!

Llamas are our pack animal of choice so you have no load to bear.  They have soft feet much like the pads on a dog's paws so they don't damage the ground as horses do and are therefore allowed into national forest areas where horses may not go.  You may walk along at your own pace and even lead your own llama buddy.  Llamas are very social, gentle creatures and you may find you'd like to make a new woolly friend on this adventure!

Upper Rainbow Lake        Lower Rainbow Lake at 12,000 ft. - great view!       We're ready to go - how 'bout you?

Adventurers are encouraged to be in good physical condition since we do a fair amount of walking - gradual hiking in to base camp but steeper hiking later on up to the peaks and lakes.  We will hike at the rate most comfortable for you so you may have an enjoyable experience in the outdoors.  Guides Tom & Sarah Hartley are CPR and First Aid certified and the great outdoors is a way of life for them so you'll be in knowledgeable and capable hands to ensure an exciting yet safe adventure.
